Stonedead Festival 2025 –
Newark Showgrounds, Newark-Upon-Trent, Saturday 23rd August, 2025
Held at the Newark Showgrounds, Stonedead Festival was created by people who wanted an old style Donington Monsters of Rock. One stage and one day that's organized by music fans for music fans, creating a welcoming, community-focused atmosphere. This formula proved popular with Heavy Rockers of old.

It was decided in 2023 to give a party night on the Friday for the camping people. The Festival has grown and grown in popularity, renowned for it's super friendly staff and relaxed attitude unlike larger festivals. Compered by Krusher Jules (as always) and Friday party nights compared by Planet Rocks, Paul Anthony.

The Festival has had headliners Saxon last year and in previous years it has seen The Blue Oyster Cult and Skid Row. This year Glasgow's very own, The Almighty were to headline the Saturday show. For Stonedead 2026, the early bird tickets went on sale this exact day of the festival. They literally sold out within minutes, rumours reporting them gone in '2 minutes!' in fact!

Similar to last year. So this begs the question, has Stonedead got too big for Newark Showgrounds and need to look for a larger venue to hold the Festival? Or are the crew happy to stay where they are?

The gates opened and the arena slowly filled up in preparation for the first band. Greeted by the ever friendly staff and Storm Troopers from the Star Wars world. German Zombie soldiers were walking around and so many people, young, old and even big hairy bikers were in some sort of fancy dress.

It is definitely a family event. Lots of children, some on shoulders with ear protection, throwing devil horn signs and screaming, others were behind the big screen playing football.. If you are lucky you could bump into Diamond Head/Saxon Axe Man, Brian Tatler or Blaze Bailey of Wolfsbane.

On Friday, I accidentally bumped into King Kraken. Saturday behind the access platform was Jayler and all their family. Fireheart's Kev Baker and Russ Grimmet were creating fans. Stonedead played Fireheart's Staring at the Sun, Kev was extremely moved by this gesture. Them and Jayler payed a visit to the access ramp to say hello to all us Disabled which was such a lovely gesture.

Later on the Saturday a family with a punk lad, massive Mohawk paid the ramp a visit giving out glow bands and high fives. All this makes the family feel so much more real. Not only is there a very popular signing tent there is a tent where the bands can sell their own merch. Occasionally you can find some of the artists milling around. So no airs and graces, just lots of rockers talking about their favorites and who they wished could be the next headliners.

Andy Man has a stall as you walk in and there is also a tent where you can go if you are feeling overwhelmed. My partner found her tent, the beer tent! The prices are what you come to expect at festivals but you are allowed to bring some of your own drink and food in. Which is really good but takes away the fun and thrill of sneaking it in like at larger festivals haha. The absent friends toast at 1100hrs in the main arena. A military tradition that has evolved into a Stonedead tradition every year.. led by Neil Meynell with a speech. Very moving.

So on with the show! The winner to open the festival is King Kraken who I had the pleasure of interviewing before the festival for Metalliville Zine and Dales Gig Reviews. A band that consist of Mark Donoghue (Vocals), Pete Rose (Rhythm Guitar), Adam Healey (Lead Guitar), Karl Meyer (Bass) & Richard Mears (Drums). They came out and owned that stage. Flames and proper heavy metal. Mark Donoghue looked like an animal looking for his prey. The prey are the crowd and he definitely had them! His voice is perfectly made for the big stage.

Out came fighting Vikings to add to the spectacle of the show. The Scientist Frankenstein and his Monster Adam perhaps was a step to far and didn't quite work on the big stage. To be honest, the band didn't need the theatrics, the music carried it for them. This was an accomplished performance by a band that deserved to be there. Great set.

As an added extra and a surprise for the Stonedead Faithful there was an Ozzy Osbourne tribute featuring former Skin Guitarist, Myke Gray who came out first leading the set and was joined by Lidya Balaban (of Crowley) plus members of the band, Florence Black performing some Black Sabbath songs.

Lidya sang 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath' while Tristan Thomas, Jordan Evans, and Perry Davies (of Florence Black) performed 'Children of the Grave', 'Supernaut' and 'Paranoid' with Myke Gray. A wonderful tribute and seeing Florence Black could be a big hint of one of the bands playing at next years Stonedead.

Black Oak County came all the way from Denmark to be here today. One band I was really looking forward to seeing. Sadly, I am a disabled Reviewer and my pain became unbearable, followed by a panic attack. I only managed to catch their first song and I had to make a retreat to my campervan for medication and meditation. They sounded really good from where I was but I am unable to give an honest review.

But I will give a review of the Accessibility staff and staff in general at the festival. They are all amazing and happy people. All very helpful and with the access side very understanding. A brilliant bunch of people.
Enforcer have travelled a fair few miles to be at Stonedead today and hail from Sweden. They have a line-up of Olof Wikstrand (Lead Vocals/Guitars), Jonas Wikstrand (Drums/Keyboards/Piano/Backing Vocals), Jonathan Nordwall (Guitars/Backing Vocals) & Garth Condit (Bass). Now this is what I am talking about: Proper Metal, hair and heavy!! It looks like an advert for Sweden when the long haired blonde band of boys enter the stage.

They are fast, heavy and a big slice of cheese all in one! The singing, playing and drumming are epic. It's so good that it's hard to put to words the craft of these guys. They are high energy, in time with the guitar swings and hold perfect harmonies. They are so much fun. I loved everything about this set. Simply fast, fun and fabulous.

Next up are The New Roses who are made up of Timmy Rough (Vocals/Guitar), Norman Bates (Guitar), Dizzy Daniels (Guitar), Hardy aka Stefan Kassner (Bass) & Urban Berz (Drums). You might know this band from the US Drama TV Series, 'Sons Of Anarchy'. This was my first time hearing them and they were everything I would call "Good old wholesome Rock music." It's not offensive, just a family-friendly, sing-along and dancing type of rock. While it's not groundbreaking, it's undeniably good.
Their performance was top-notch and full of energy. It was clear they loved being on that stage. Their enthusiasm was contagious and it resonated with the crowd who were completely swept up in the band's vibe. With really melodic drum beat, big solos and a couple of ballads, the show was a hit. The highlight? 'Natural Born Vagabonds' which had everyone singing and waving their arms. An excellent set from them.

Primal Fear's band members are Ralf Scheepers (Vocals), Mat Sinner (Bass/Vocals), Magnus Karlsson (Guitars), Thalia Bellazecca (Guitars) & André Hilgers (Drums). Before we go any further, I just want to remind you that I interviewed Mat Sinner if you haven't already watched that. You will find the interview on Metalliville Zine and Dales Gig Reviews.
For lovers of European Metal, this band is for you. I loved this performance so much. I was completely blown away by their performance. Singer Ralf's powerful voice and commanding stage presence were incredible. The music was expertly driven by veteran Bassist, Mat Sinner, whose playing was nothing short of brilliant.

It was Thalia who stole the show though if I am honest. Her style, stage presence and captivating performance drew everyone's attention. She had amazing chemistry with Mat Sinner, with plenty of laughs and smiles shared between them. On the opposite side of the stage, the long-haired guitar supremo, Magnus mesmerized the crowd with his fast, masterful playing, while André's drumming was simply amazing. Together, they delivered a supreme performance.
It's hard to find a single fault with a band this talented. They're seasoned professionals, and the youthful energy Thalia brings to the stage makes the show even more dynamic. I'm surprised this band isn't bigger-with this line-up since they're definitely onto a winner.

D-A-D are a band featuring four Dutchmen that go by the names of Jesper Binzer (Lead Vocals/Electric Guitar), Jacob Binzer (Electric Guitar), Stig Pedersen (Bass Guitar/Backing Vocals) & Laust Sonne (Drums/Backing Vocals). They were on my 'must-see' list, but the live show just didn't work for me. Maybe it was because I was too far back, or maybe I just didn't get it.

The performance felt off-balance although their bassist, the quirky Stig Pedersen was a total showman-bouncing around in a wild outfit. I will go further to say he was actually reminiscent of Robin Williams' cheerleader costume and could play a cool, clear bass guitar. He was a stark contrast to the rest of the band though, who were so bland in comparison that the whole thing just didn't click.
Jesper's vocals didn't carry well and I noticed people around me losing interest, either chatting amongst themselves or walking away. I'm sure it was a different experience down at the front, but from where I was, I left feeling disappointed.

My childhood era: The Sweet! Who doesn't remember singing 'Wig Wam Bam'? Now Made popular again by MARVEL. I have to admit I was super excited to see these. Sadly, only one original member remains in Andy Scott (Guitars) alongside Paul Manzi (Lead Vocals), Tom Cory (Guitars/Keyboards/Vocals), Lee Small (Bass/Backing Vocals) & Adam Booth (Drums/Percussion/Backing Vocals).
Andy joked about his health and clearly had a good bit of banter with the rest of the band exclaiming, "StoneDead? More like Not Dead where I'm concerned!" It was really nice to see him after his health scare. He looked good and he played like he was in his 20's.

There was great energy from the rest of the band. With some seriously good vocals from Paul and Tom even got the keys out for a song! It was fabulous but it is a large stage. Tom seemed to hiding in the corner and almost huddled next to him was Lee on Bass. Far left was Andy Scott, seemingly all alone.
Also it is a GLAM band! Tom, Lee and Adam on drums all in Black? Where's the Glam gone? At least make a little bit of an effort. That's small gripes from an entertaining show. The crowd had a sing and a dance and were left with lots of smiles and feelings of nostalgia. Nice set, would I see them again? Probably not but it was enjoyable.

Before I get into it, I'd like to say that I had the pleasure of interviewing John Corabi before the festival. You will find the Interview on Metalliville Zine and Dales Gig Reviews. Anyway, we were treated to an hour of pure greatness!
This supergroup of a band, Dead Daisies are made up of John Corabi (Vocals), Doug Aldrich (Guitars), David Lowy (Guitars), Michael Devin (Bass) & Tommy Clufetos (Drums) had it all. They were the complete package from meeting fans in the signing tent to an incredible fourteen-song set.

With soaring guitar solos, a high-energy stage presence and a drum solo that had the crowd roaring, they proved they were a band to remember. We were treated to America showmanship, country rock and covers of some classics like CCR's 'Fortunate Son'. The ladies definitely loved being this close to Mötley Crüe's former singer, John Corabi.
Dead Daisies blend of soulful, Country Rock got the crowd moving and singing along and the band loved it. The energy and chemistry from all the members made it a performance to remember. This is my second Stonedead festival and this is my "stand out" moment for me.

Now here we are with the Stonedead Festival headliners! Back in the 90's I desperately wanted to like The Almighty because I loved the bands logo and album art work but I just didn't get it. They were quite frankly, not my thing. But 2025 I thought give them a chance, I might be pleasantly surprised.
Back with the original line-up we Ricky Warwick (Vocals/Guitar), Tantrum (Guitar/Backing Vocals), Floyd London (Bass/Backing Vocals) & Stump Munroe (Drums/Percussion/Backing Vocals). I can't fault them musically since they've been in this business long enough to be excellent musicians.

Ricky Warwick's voice is excellent. I loved him with 'Black Star Riders' but for a headlining performance I expected a proper spectacle of a show. This stage was dark and introverted. Where was the spectacular show?
The set was largely chosen by the Almighty fans, so that meant no new stuff. All the Almighty fans were down front lapping it all up. To me though it was all the same. Some sounded a bit better than others but it mostly blended one song into another. I really didn't enjoy it. After the high energy of the Dead Daisies then this depressing darkness wasn't the spectacle I was expecting.

As previously said, with all the Almighty fans up front, the rest of us endured the performance up to 'Free And Easy': a song I actually recognized and liked. The band shouted to the crowd, "We will see you in November", to which the fans screamed yes! But a large group of people behind shouted "No you F**ck*ng won't!".
The highlight for me was their cover of Metallica's, 'The Four Horsemen' which was their first time singing it live. They ended with 'Wild & Wonderful'. The Almighty are definitely a marmite band to say the least. It felt like the performance was a let down after a great festival but you can't please them all.

I know Stonedead Festival has some constraints with noise and have an 11pm cut off but some fireworks to end the festival would have lifted the gloom. Sadly that wasn't to be. Tired and a little bored my festival ended and yes I have tickets for next year!
