Prog Collective – Worlds On Hold
(Purple Pyramid Records / Cleopatra Records – 2021)
An album and band that is the brainchild of Yes bassist, Billy Sherwood that features an array of various well known artists of the progressive rock genre and other classic rockers who deliver brand new songs plus a few famous cuts are given the prog treatment too.
Highlights include 'Two Trajectories' feat. Geoff Tate and Ron 'Bumblefoot' Thal that is the lead-off single of the album with amazing vocals and killer shredding as you'd more than likely expect; the cosmicness of 'Meant To Be' feat. Jan Akkerman and Billy Sherwood or the wirly weirdness of 'Brave New World' thanks to Sonja Kristina and Steve Hillage.
Standouts of the covers include Graham Bonnet & Derek Sherinian's take of Procal Harum's 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale'; the late John Wetton's rendition of The Beatles 'Penny Lane' with light acoustic beauty, bongos and gorgeous vocals or 'More Than A Feeling' (by Boston) that equals the excellence of the original that comes courtesy of Alan White & Tony Kaye.
Or what about a great song by The Alan Parson's Project that I have personally never heard before but Joe Lynn Tuner's singing is so up there that it would be rude not to give it a mention as its so damn good – with Martin Barre (Original Wishbone Ash Member) in there too!
Be nice to see this gang of performers do a show or two together live someday a this as top class and cosmically cool!
