DeWolff/Silveroller -
The Garage, Highbury, London Friday 18th April 2025
Breaking News!
Alert; alert; a 70’s revival has swept down the country from Glasgow to London ending in The Garage tonight. Flares, berets, silks and furs; shades of gold, rust, beige and earthy browns adorned by the bands and fans alike.
Characterised in a vibrant and eclectic mix of styles and self-expression adding a feeling of ‘hip’ and ‘groovy’ once again. DeWolff, the truly awesome trio, from the Netherlands have imported this style which has quickly spread to embrace Silveroller too.
Talking of which, Silveroller are the starter, serving up their own version of the 70's. Mainman and Singer, Jonnie Hodson arriving on stage all shaggy hair, scarf, tight shirt and flares looking a mix of Paul Rodgers (Free/Bad Co.) and David Coverdale (Whitesnake). One half expects “Here’s a song for ya!” as he launches into strutting and mike stand twirling.
‘Other Side’ gets us started with a bang. This has a real Bad Co. groove going on immediately transporting us back to the early 70s. Kenny Tashjy all the way from Boston, Massachusetts looking good on lead guitar playing the Blues with real feeling and passion.

Dylan Evans on bass, youthful and fresh faced, very easy on the eye and Lucas Tadini an Brazilian-Italian on keys looking resplendent in white suit (very John Travolta!). These three join Jonnie and Joe Major drums to complete their new, take 3 international line up.
From the abyss of ‘The Just Push Play’ festival which saw the band fall apart just as they were gaining momentum, it was through talking with DeWolff’s Pablo that Jonnie knew he must carry on. The two bands have built a bond, particularly Pablo and Jonnie. Pablo urged Jonnie not to give up, to find a guitarist and the rest will follow. He was right, and here we are seeing a reborn Silveroller.
Next up is ‘Trouble Follows Me’ with Jonnie on the harmonica. He’s a pretty nifty player too which adds depth of sound. The song has a real catchiness transporting us back to ‘Whitesnake’ vibes.
‘Nobody’s Business’ slows us down a little, nice and soulfully blue. Jonnie pulling his shapes and poses and some great guitar work from Kenny. Following on with the fantastic uplifting ‘Black Crow’, this gets the audience moving and interacting. There is such vibe and energy.

It all ends too soon with ‘Hold' which immediately elicits plenty of hand clapping, audience interaction and participation leaving us all feeling uplifted and wild. Yes, freedom really has got a hold on all of us!
What a finish! A New Dawn for Silveroller.
This is DeWolff’s 3rd visit to London that we have seen, following on from the 100 Club and The Omeara. Once again adorned in their now iconic, brown embroidered outfits made by Luka and girlfriend.
The Garage subtly positioned, but easily seen as emerging from the station lit up in neon blue and in true cinema style DeWolff in red below. Inside is pretty smart holding around 600 fans. Some very excited fans including brothers Tony (whom we have met at each show) and Mark plus Head of DeWolff’s fan club, Yolanda (whom we finally meet for the first time).
Are you ready? Yes, we are, oh yes, we are! Got the ticket. Train’s a comin’. It’s the ‘Night Train’ and we’re all aboard. Let’s go! And go we do as DeWolff launch whole heartedly into their first song ‘Night Train’ which sees guitarist and singer, Pablo van de Poel as one with his guitar, pulling moves and shapes both body and face.
Backed up by brother, Luka van de Poel, giving a right old pounding on drums whilst adding his beautiful vocal harmonies. All accompanied by Robin Piso who’s all bar bashing the brains out of his organ with hair flailing enthusiasm.

Wow, what a start! Next up soul sounding ‘Heart Stopping Kinda Show’ and it really is, especially when I get a sneaky little dance with Pablo later in the show when he does his audience walk about! ‘Natural Woman’ comes next. Pablo encourages us to finger click. He throws in some high vocals and high leg kicks.
Pablo is proud to announce for tonight’s show we have the happy addition of the band’s backing singers. Travelling issues held no bounds for them getting to the show on time; train cancellations, train delays, even changing on the train to be stage ready. Dedication girls, but well worth it. Fantastic!
‘Will O’ The Wisp’ follows. The Garage transfixed. A mix of guitar and keys intertwine gently before the vocals of the De Poel brothers caress our souls. Piso adds keys with delightful dexterity. Pablo wrenches every ounce of emotion from his 6 strings. Luka lightly creating the beats that the song builds on. Magnificent!
Tribal drums embellish the opening of ‘Out On The Town’ from Muscle Shoal. The interplay between the trio is mesmerising as they go off into different tangents. Luka getting his turn to shine with a drum solo.

Another from Muscle comes; 10 minutes of beauty in the form of ‘Snowbird’. Creating a beautiful and melodic musical landscape that floats through the air caressing the listeners. The seemingly spontaneous improvised jams are effortless.
‘R U My Saviour’ has a funky groove adding another dimension to the show. ‘Ophelia’ next. Another from Muscle. It builds from the rhythm of Luka’s indigenous American tribal beat. This trio are off the scale! Each song exuding class.
“Let’s talk, let’s talk about…”, mesmerizingly hums Pablo. “Let’s talk about Merchandise!” T-shirts are great; he throws one out to the crowd. Hats too; catch! But DeWolff have their own pack of playing cards too. How cool is that! Of course he also informs us of their photographic book by Satellite June.
‘Queen Of Space & Time’ from Love, Death & In Between takes us to another dimension as the blend of instrumentation seemingly takes us to the outer limits of the galaxy. Up next is ‘Nothings Changing’ from Tascam Tapes, the album that was recorded for less than $50! This brings us to the close of the set; a set that has had everything.

Do you think we’ve had enough? Hell no! We could boogie all night long. And just as well because we know what’s coming. ‘Rosita’ a 20 minute plus encore that transcends through Soul, Rock, Gospel and Latino. Eat your heart out Bohemian Rhapsody! Everything has gone into this including the kitchen sink! The song has so many twists and turns. It’s a love story of sorts; the mighty power of love. We’re feeling it.
Pablo leaves the stage to crowd walk. Mingling with, talking and singing to, hugging his adoring fans. Reaching the bar, he tells us of how when he was in Oxford he was asked to pay. He’ll pay he says and the bar tender produces a card reader! Laughs from all. He has no money so some really kind souls pay for him. That’s the mighty power of love!
A few more hugs, then my little dance/smooch with Pablo before he returns to the stage. Am I smiling like a besotted teenager? You bet! I’m ecstatic as are all around me for me. And yes, the moment was caught on video! Audience participation ensues with us singing ‘the mighty power of love’ in a variety of voices both low and high! The final climax is upon us at 26 minutes 41 seconds. Wow!
Rapturous applause. Whoops and cheers, elation and exhaustion. What a night! What a band! DeWolff have been going for 17 years. What a journey it’s been, with them now establishing themselves here in the UK. Another 17 years minimum please.

A big thank you to both DeWolff and Silveroller for staying to meet the fans. And some very devoted ones at that. Robin Piso and our son James sharing an enormous embrace. A shout out to brothers Tony and Mark who have been to every UK show this tour and Tony to every one previously. And finally, Yolanda for looking after the DeWolff fans and fan club.
