Electric Boys - Shady Side of Town (E.P.)

(Mighty Music – 2025)

(Genre: Rock)

From the very first beat of the opening track, 'Head Honcho', I immediately knew I was in for some classic, sleazy, bluesy rock.

While this Swedish band have been around since 1987, I was completely unfamiliar with their catalogue, making this entire listening experience an education. Never has being educated been so much fun.

They comprise of Conny Bloom (Guitar/Lead Vocals), Andy Christell (Bass/Backing Vocals), 'Slim' Martin (Guitar/Backing Vocals - Lead Vocals on 'Keep It Dark') & Jolle Atlagic (Drums). A highlight is undoubtedly the Fantastic guitar work from Slim, particularly showcased on the second track, 'Grand Explosivos', which masterfully transitions from rock into a vibrant Latin style before slamming back into the heavier material.

The journey continues with the third track, 'Looking for Vajayjay', which offers a funky rock ride at a noticeably slower pace than the EP's opening songs. Despite the change in tempo, the running theme of great guitar work remains consistent. This track also serves as a strong showcase for the versatility of Conny Bloom's singing and the impressive bass playing of Andy Christel.

The EP then closes with 'Keep it Dark', a funky track that sounds like it came straight out of a 'Huggy Bear' collection. Featuring 'Slim' Martin on singing duties, who handles the higher register where Conny might struggle. It is a very catchy song. The satisfying build-up and the repeated chorus bring the EP to an incredibly enjoyable close, making this final track the definitive highlight of the release.

They are definitely worth listening to and this EP is the perfect place to start. Altogether, this short but potent EP from the Electric Boys serves as a brilliant showcase of their sound. While the short tracklist is perhaps the only drawback, it is one that effectively leaves the listener wanting more, driving them immediately to the band's deeper catalogue.

For those new to the band, this EP is the perfect, starting point, and a Must-listen for any serious Guitar music lovers. The Electric Boys are definitely worth a listen.
